The Maserati Ghibli offered here, chassis AM1151346, was completed in September 1969, finished in *Avorio Chiaro (Light Ivory) over red leather, and delivered new to Barcelona, Spain. Consistent with its build date, this mid-production Ghibli is equipped with the 4.7-liter engine, five-speed ZF manual gearbox, and characteristic interior appointments including Veglia instruments, toggle switches, and Lucas signal stalk. Many enthusiasts regard this combination of features as the preferred specification for the model.

While little is known of this car’s earliest history, it was imported into the US in the late 1970s and updated with typical American-market equipment including an MPH speedometer, wire wheels, a rectangular air box, rear bumper guards, side marker lights, and exhaust system. It was owned by a Southern California-based Maserati enthusiast for several decades and has spent the past few years confined to static storage. Except for older paint and upholstery in the original colors, the Ghibli is presented today in largely original, unrestored condition and appears to be a strong candidate for a comprehensive recommissioning or a sound basis for a complete restoration. Importantly, the car retains its original matching-numbers engine and is offered with a set of five original Campagnolo cast alloy wheels and assorted spares.

Purchased by me from Laro Automobilhandel August 27, 1996. According to his information, a Campana conversion. The car was partially restored after 1989 (paint, roof, leather, chassis, exhaust system) and completely technically overhauled in 2014 (engine, brakes, rims…). The goal was to get a very rare vehicle that you could take on a tour at any time.

Beautiful car in superb condition this rare European Maserati Ghibli SS with the 4.9 liter engine. Orginally delivered via dealer Sport Auto Roma to Arch. Marcello Masciolini. Car is in the most wanted configuration. Blue Medio colour (Salchi code 20A173) with senape leather (connoly code PAC 1775), the quad exhaust was an original option which looks very nice. Mechanically the car is in perfect condition. Engine runs very good and smooth. The V8 produces a sound which you will never forget. Perfect entry for rallies or shows.

This Maserati Ghibli was delivered on October 18, 1969 and sold new through Sport Auto in Rome, Italy to artist Giuseppe Bartolini. It was imported to the US in February 1998 and then acquired by private investigator Richard Di Sabatino. The car was refinished in black over red more than a decade ago, and power is provided by a 4.7-liter DOHC V8 paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Service work commissioned by the current owner within the last few years included replacement of the clutch slave cylinder, clutch pressure plate, front shocks, and wheel bearings. The steering box, master cylinder, and all four brake calipers were also rebuilt, and the wheels, bumpers, and grille have been refinished. This Ghibli is now offered on dealer consignment with a Maserati Certificate of Origin, recent service records, and a clean California title.

This Maserati Ghibli 4.7 with Matching Numbers and Original Build SheetsAccording to the Maserati Classiche Certificate and original factory documentation accompanying the car, this matching numbers Ghibli was ordered on September 24, 1969 directly from the factory in Verde Bosco (dark green) with Senape (mustard) Connolly Leather interior and a Becker Grand Prix radio. Around the 2000s, the car was painted black and the interior recovered in red vinyl.

Description from Hemmings advert 2019

“The serial numbers are for a 1969 delivered in Italy, as confirmed by MIE through its factory contacts. No info is available on how it came to the US.
I acquired the car in 1982 in Los Angeles. It had a small-block Chevy and 3-speed trans. The previous owner didn’t know what happened to the Maserati motor/trans. The car was registered as a 1967, probably due to the lesser polution control requirements. Rear body parts appear to be from 1967 model, which support that date.
I replaced the small-block with a factory-sourced 454″ LS-7 worked over by Traco Engineering to 513+ HP on pump gas, mated with a Doug Nash 5-speed.
Classic Auto Restoration in Anchorage performed extensive body work and repaint in 2004. The car had been damaged in shipping up to Alaska. Since then they repainted the wheels. I rarely drive the car, and never in the rain (forget about winter here).
I stripped the car myself before the body work and redid all the chrome, and replaced all the pieces afterwards, except for the glass, which Classic reinstalled. All replacement parts came from MIE.
I completely rebuilt the rear brakes and suspension in 2008.
The upholstery is original; the carpets need replacing. The front suspension/brakes need attention”

1970 MASERATI GHIBLI 4.7L

French title
Chassis n° AM 115*1402
Engine n° AM 115*982

• One of Giugiaro’s most beautiful designs
• Engine recently rebuilt, running-in to be completed
• Well cared-for car, ready to be driven

According to its factory build card, this Ghibli 4.7, chassis no. 1402, was built on 8 November 1969 and first registered nearly a year later, on 1 September 1970, in the Rome area. It went on to spend most of its life in Italy. In 2014, it came to France, by then finished in its superb current combination of black paint and
a ‘Senape’ leather interior. It had previously been restored, with black chosen in preference to its original ‘Blu Scuro’, a very dark blue. Particularly well preserved, its upholstery is undoubtedly original and has been well cared for, giving it an attractive patina; all the carpets were previously restored and are in very good condition. Its current owner, a great car enthusiast and connoisseur of the model, bought the car at auction in 2016; following a mechanical problem, he had the engine entirely rebuilt in 2017. The work was done by the specialist QM Developments at Gullegem in Belgium at a cost of more than 40,000 € (as the invoices show). As the car has been little used since, its running-in will need to be completed. The engine bloc is not original, but is of the correct type and is therefore ready to cover thousands of miles to the delight of the car’s passengers. It has a superb stainless steel exhaust. In sound overall condition, attractively presented and with its engine professionally rebuilt, this example, with its attractive estimated price, should certainly appeal to fans of the Ghibli. Its magnificent design, by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro, mated to a twin-cam V8, will remain forever an automotive masterpiece.

The auction of this lot will take place on Friday 18 March 2022.

Germany

The vehicle: This beautiful 1970 Maserati Ghibli SS is on offer from a collection (VIN 115 49 1404). It is an original, unrestored vehicle. The last owner bought it from the first owner in Germany in 1982 and has since driven it a maximum of 500 km per year on Tenerife due to its extremely extensive collection. So the kilometers are absolutely authentic.

Exterior:The vehicle is in very nice original condition. The design: Guigaro at its best. According to his own statement, the Ghibli is still his most beautiful design today. The line is sensational and doesn’t look a bit old after more than 50 years. Long bonnet, flowing lines, large windows, short stern: it is perhaps one of the most beautiful Gran Tursimo ever built.

Interior: The interior is in top condition. It is very comfortable when you can handle the typical Italian “ergonomics”.

So he drives:Fantastic. The Ghibli is a driver’s car of the purest water. The engine sounds more multifaceted than an Italian opera. He shoots unleashed and clearly plays the lead role in this drama-dominated piece. The driver is the conductor, he is happy about outstanding actors in the form of a precise gear shift and a comfortable and neutral chassis. It ran 274 km / h in the 1968 test, which was the absolute top league. But in contrast to the competition from Ferrari and Lamborghini, you didn’t have to be a pronounced masochist in the Ghibli if you wanted to go a little further away: It was and is quite suitable for long distances and masters long stages with flying colors.

The driving qualities of the Ghibli leave us with a pitying thought to all the Ghibli that eke out their existence as an investment in the shadow of large collector’s garages.
