This sensational 4.9 SS was delivered new to West Nyack, New York, and fitted with the desirable five-speed ZF manual gearbox. It was recently the recipient of a meticulous five-year rotisserie restoration performed by the consignor, a Ghibli specialist with over 40 years of experience restoring European sports cars. The Ghibli was completely disassembled, and the body was chemically stripped, neutralized, etched, and acid dipped. The engine, suspension, and differential were rebuilt, various ancillary systems attended to, and its five-speed manual gearbox received new seals and bearings. The Maserati was repainted in black with Glasurit paint and the interior was retrimmed in cream leather, with the dash re-covered in correct “mouse fur” sourced from Italy. The consignor’s thoughtful dedication is evident in the smallest details, such as the correct Arman wiper arms. To see a Ghibli restored to this level is uncommon, and this example’s handsome colors and 4.9 SS specification make it even more appealing. Accompanied by a tool kit, jack, manual, restoration photos and a restoration summary, this is a fantastic representation of one of Maserati’s most usable and highly acclaimed road cars

The first owner ordered the car and flew to Modena to take delivery. For some weeks, he drove it around Europe and had it shipped back in the fall of 1972 to the USA from France. His name was Donald Helgesen of Janesville, Wisconsin. It has the factory paperwork and order sheet, Warranty book, Owners manual, Voxon 8-track user manual, Maserati Dealer directory, etc.

I located this car from the Imperial Palace collection out of Las Vegas. This massive collection was managed by Don Williams who is the founder of the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, California. I believe I purchased this car in the early 1990s. Being young and somewhat naive, I bought more on emotion than objectivity. My mistake was I didn’t have a PPI performed. I soon discovered that the motor in this car produced blow-by. It was clear that a full engine rebuild was needed and I didn’t have the funds or the desire to go through this process. I sold the car a few months after I initially purchased it. If I recall correctly, a fellow from Texas bought it. I do not know where the car resides today. On sale at Gullwing August 2024Here This 1972 Maserati Ghibli is one of 425 coupes built to the improved 4.9-liter SS specifications. An honest and well-preserved car, it is very well equipped with desirable features including power steering, air conditioning, Becker radio, Borrani wire wheels, and the all-important 5-speed manual gearbox, ensuring maximum driving enjoyment. Finished in metallic burgundy and fitted with factory-type wire wheels, this Ghibli SS is an honest, attractive, and well-preserved car that invites regular driving. The cabin, trimmed in tan leather and accented with deep maroon carpets is particularly inviting, displaying a pleasant patina earned through care and use. Electric windows, air conditioning, power steering, and a Becker Europa ensure you arrive at your destination unfussed and in impeccable style. The Maserati Ghibli is renowned for its long-legged, mile crushing performance, and this ultimate-spec 4.9-liter SS is a great example that will have you reaching for the keys at every opportunity to crack open the throttles on its sonorous quad-cam V8. It is in need of restoration and partially dismantled but we are talking about a great project, with no signs of rust, fully matching numbers and complete to the 99%. The chassis is excellent, with its complete original interior, AC and wire wheels. All appear to be original. The wood rimmed steering wheel is in good shape, although there are small hairline cracks in the varnish. The switches and controls are in good condition throughout. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire an interesting, rare, and attractive classic Italian sports car. This particular car spent its life in California and for almost 30 years had only one owner. Restored by Candini see the video here
