The first owner ordered the car and flew to Modena to take delivery. For some weeks, he drove it around Europe and had it shipped back in the fall of 1972 to the USA from France. His name was Donald Helgesen of Janesville, Wisconsin.
This Ghibli was featured in an article from a special magazine series published by Road and Track magazine called ” Exotic Classics” from the December 1986 issue. At that time, it was owned by Dr. Stan Bishop of Rialto California. He was the then second owner. He subsequently then sold the car to a Shahriar Mazandi of Beverly Hills, California and I happened to buy the car from him in 2000.

It has the factory paperwork and order sheet, Warranty book, Owners manual, Voxon 8-track user manual, Maserati Dealer directory, etc.

Rare & Desirable 335hp 4.9 Litre SS
Just 2-Owners from New with Single Previous Ownership for 36 years
Numbers-Matching as Per Maserati S.p.A. Certificate of Origin
Complete Maserati Classiche Documentation
Document File Spanning 1980-2016 – Offered with Service, Spare Parts & Workshop Manuals
Rebuilt Engine & Brake System
Formerly the Property of Baseball Pitcher and Playboy Bo Belinsky
A Masterpiece of style, balance, design and aerodynamic efficiency
This late example of Maserati’s famed Ghibli 4.9 Liter SS Coupé, completed in June of 1972 by Officine A. Maserati S.p.A., wearing Argento Auteuil (silver) paint over Black Connoly leather with comforts worthy of such a thoroughbred GT: adjustable steering column, anti-theft steering lock, tinted & electric windows, reclining seats with head rests, heated rear windscreen, dashboard clock, Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio with supplemental Voxson 8-track and air conditioning. Long excursions are intended to be comfortable thanks to power steering and plenty of power on reserve from the 4.9 liter V8 motor. Maserati S.p.A. of Modena confirms with original Certificate of Origin that all chassis, engine and body numbers are matching as it left the factory. Additional Classiche documents include: Final Tests data Sheet, Technical & Aesthetic Characteristics, End of Line Data Sheet and Delivery Note.
The SS was delivered new to the States, originally owned by famed playboy pitcher Bo Belinsky and his wife. In late 1980, Jane Weyerhaeuser Belinsky consigned the Ghibli for sale at Alfa of Tacoma in Washington, where it sold on December 31, 1980 to a Mr. Snyder for $19,500 cash with 14,016 miles on the odometer. The original purchase paperwork from this transaction is included in the car’s dossier of records spanning 1980-2016. Mr. Synder would go on to own the vehicle for 36 years. In November 1989, 2316 received an exterior repaint and freshening of the cabin’s black leather upholstery, while in recent years (2012-2015) the Maserati was taken back to Alfa of Tacoma for a complete mechanical overhaul, including an out engine rebuild and complete brake service. Most recently, an annual tune-up was performed, along with new stabilizer bushings, stainless exhaust system and period correct Pirelli Cinturato tires on its newly refinished bi-metal Borrani wheels. Over $60,000 was spent during the 4-year mechanical restoration, with all invoices and documentation from Snyder’s ownership accompanying the car.

This example was delivered new to Rome and is still presented in what is perhaps one of the very prettiest colour combinations on a Ghibli Azzurro Artico over “Senape” (Tan) Connolly hides.
This particular Ghibli remained in Italy until 2014, when it was exported to Germany, right before being acquired by the current Belgium owner.
The general condition of the Ghibli can best be described as an older restoration that is still showing nicely.
This particular example left the factory with power steering and air-conditioning.

It retains its original matching numbers engine, which runs perfectly.
The bodywork has been repainted at least once but retains the original factory colour scheme.

I located this car from the Imperial Palace collection out of Las Vegas. This massive collection was managed by Don Williams who is the founder of the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, California. I believe I purchased this car in the early 1990s. Being young and somewhat naive, I bought more on emotion than objectivity. My mistake was I didn’t have a PPI performed. I soon discovered that the motor in this car produced blow-by. It was clear that a full engine rebuild was needed and I didn’t have the funds or the desire to go through this process. I sold the car a few months after I initially purchased it. If I recall correctly, a fellow from Texas bought it. I do not know where the car resides today.

It is in need of restoration and partially dismantled but we are talking about a great project, with no signs of rust, fully matching numbers and complete to the 99%. The chassis is excellent, with its complete original interior, AC and wire wheels. All appear to be original. The wood rimmed steering wheel is in good shape, although there are small hairline cracks in the varnish. The switches and controls are in good condition throughout.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire an interesting, rare, and attractive classic Italian sports car. This particular car spent its life in California and for almost 30 years had only one owner.
