For sale at McGrath Maserati Sept 2020

Owned by the current enthusiast owner since May 2006
Registered with the DVLA in September 1989 and just four owners since
Original engine (4.7) rebuilt by McGrath Maserati in 2007
Repainted through McGrath Maserati in 2012 in its original and attractive metallic celeste
Retaining a largely original black interior
Benefitting from a comprehensive history file and known to McGrath Maserati since 1997
This beautiful Maserati Ghibli was manufactured in June 1969 and sold new through the distributor Sport Auto in Rome, Italy. Its original colours were metallic light blue paint with a black leather interior, just as it is today.

By the 1980’s the now metallic black Ghibli had ventured north into Switzerland, and was registered in August 1988 to an Englishman who resided in a picturesque area of Switzerland near Nyon, beside Lake Geneva.

In September 1989 the car was registered in England to a lady in Colchester, Essex, and just over a year later in December 1990 it was sold to a car enthusiast from Milton Keynes.
McGrath Maserati first saw the car in 1997 but our knowledge of the car stemmed from six years earlier. The gentleman enjoyed this wonderful Ghibli during their sixteen year tenure and in the Spring of 2006 it was for sale at a Maserati dealership in the south of England.
Acquired in May 2006 from the Maserati dealership by the current owner, the Ghibli joined a collection of regularly enjoyed Maserati and other modern and classic cars. The odometer recorded 75,000 kilometres at this time, and shortly after purchase it returned to McGrath Maserati for the first time in some years for an inspection.
It was decided to commence a gradual process of recommissioning and firstly the engine was removed from the car and thoroughly overhauled in our on-site engineering rooms. Soon after this work had been completed the car appeared in the pages of Car Magazine in their classic car section, looking wonderful and still in its metallic black colour.
The new owner proceeded to enjoy his car regularly on Maserati Club events and other journeys around England and Europe, and in August 2011 after about 9,000 kilometres had been covered he decided to undertake a restoration of the bodywork and return the car to its beautiful original metallic light blue colour. After the work and then looking fabulous in its factory colours, the car appeared in the December 2013 issue of Classic Cars magazine for their Ghibli Buyers Guide article. A few months later in April 2014, Classic & Sportscar featured the car on the magazine cover and in its Maserati Centenary article alongside a Maserati Mistral that had also been supplied to the publication by McGrath Maserati.
Further paint repairs were undertaken five years later after nearly 8,000 additional kilometres had been enjoyed, and the following year in the autumn of 2017 McGrath Maserati overhauled the cylinder heads. The car has since been displayed at the NEC Classic Motor Show in Birmingham on the Maserati Club stand.
Driving superbly, this Ghibli presents beautifully with its superb paintwork and its largely original interior, with just the centre console having been retrimmed by McGrath Maserati in recent years. It boasts a large history file featuring correspondence from the Maserati factory confirming its date of production, place of first sale, and original colours, plus the 1980’s Swiss registration document, and invoices to new owners documenting the minimal changes of ownership of the car. Also included are a copy of its first UK V5 registration document, a quantity of expired MOT certificates, photographs by the current owner in 2006 for his insurance taken shortly after purchase, a large quantity of invoices from McGrath Maserati detailing all of the works carried out to the car during our twenty three years of care on the car, and copies of the magazines in which the car features.
This is a wonderful and highly maintained 1960’s Maserati in beautiful colours and with an excellent history file, and we are delighted to be offering it for sale.
The final photograph shown was taken by Tony Baker for Classic & Sportscar Magazine for an article featuring the car in 2014.

Belgium

This 1969 Maserati Ghibli SS is one of 1,170 coupes manufactured during six years of production and is among approximately 425 examples built with power from a 4.9-liter quad-cam V8. Chassis 1142 is said to have been ordered new in July 1969 by Count Franco Grandi, son of the former Italian minister of foreign affairs known for his role in the overthrow of Mussolini, Dino Grandi. A replacement engine was reportedly installed via Maserati in the 1970s before the car was purchased out of the US in 1989 by a UK collector who initiated a refurbishment and retained the car until 2015. It was then sold to a Belgian owner who completed the project, which included a repaint in the original shade of Blu Medio, a re-trim of the interior in red leather, and an engine overhaul. The car was purchased by its current owner in 2017 and was later shipped to Modena, Italy, for Maserati Classiche certification, which was awarded in March 2022. The car is also equipped with a ZF five-speed manual transmission, a limited-slip differential, servo-assisted disc brakes, 15” Campagnolo alloy wheels, a Ferrero steering wheel, power steering, and air conditioning. This Tipo AM115/49 is now offered by its owner in Roeselare, Belgium, with Maserati Classiche certification documents and badges, a copy of its factory build sheet, invoices from current ownership, and Belgian registration.

" I was in Switzerland, Davos, with my father when Mr Alfieri asked him if it was possible to lend the green Ghibl for the duration of the 1969 Geneva Motor show. They gave to him a blue Quattroporte for the time of the Motor Show and after he picked up a perfectly cleaned "as good as new" car! That amused him very much. About the green one, I remember a visit at the factory with my father about a braking problem of the car: he'd had a bad moment in the Passo Stelvio descent. Mr Alfieri said: " Una Ghibli non è una machina di corsa!". However, an upgrade was made. "

According to Maserati S.p.A. Classiche, chassis no. 1158 was delivered on the 13th of November 1969 to Autosport di Scardovi D. and sold locally to Bruno Otello & Ing. Umberto Pederzoli S.p.A. in Castelmaggiore, Bologna, wearing Blue Pervinca paint over White Connoly leather with optional radio. Maserati Classic Department in Modena, Italy verifies all original build specifications and order with a true copy of the original Delivery Note, Internal Factory Order, Historical Information, Technical/Aesthetic Characteristics and The Certificate of Origin.

1158 shows and performs very well as a nice "driver quality" example and still retains its numbers matching 4 cam V8 with the correct Weber 40 DCNL5 carbs and the highly desirable 5-speed transmission. Being an "early Ghibli" the car is equipped with what is considered the better looking, sleeker small hubbed steering wheel, more reliable Lucas signal stalk and the desirable toggle switches instead of rockers. Bright and glossy, the paintwork shows well overall for its age, as does the upholstery and beautiful stainless exhaust exiting the rear. Period Becker Europa radio and Italian license plates enhance its presentation. The undercarriage and compartments appear tidy and appropriately aged. Additionally all lights, radio, power windows, and wipers are in good working order. A recent compression test showed consistent and average results of 175 PSI per cylinder.

This Ghibli 4.7 Coupe was delivered new to Paris, having been produced in June of 1969 and sporting a colour scheme of Blue Medio over a Black leather interior, which it wears today. It displays fewer than 65,000 km on its odometer, and as per a Bill of Sale on file, the car was acquired by Mr Petitjean in June of 1982 with just 64,000 km on its odometer. Based upon a service tag present in the engine bay from its year of acquisition, the Ghibli has travelled fewer than 40 km in the last 38 years, having spent most of its time in static storage. As a result, a mechanical recommissioning will be required in order to return the car to road use. An excellent candidate for a restoration, this Ghibli could return to its GT origins, with a European road trip the perfect reintroduction to the open road.

The car was delivered new to an Italian Count who later visited Bulgaria. He met a German girl from the DDR and fell in love with her. While on a trip with her around in Bulgaria the couple had an accident with the Ghibli. The Count had to leave Bulgaria on the spot and left the Ghibli behind (...and the girl! …).
The wreck was sold thru that country until 1981 when a truckdriver purchased it. He sold it to the next owner in 2001. Since then the car "resides" on the personal scrapyard of this person in Bulgaria.
