Here’s the advert
Swedish title
Chassis Number: AM 115*1052
Engine Number: AM 115*1052
Chassis 1052 on offer was sold new in Italy 1969 and was exported to Sweden where it was registered on the 18th of April 1975. In 1994 the Chairman of the Swedish FIA, Gunnar Elmgren, bought the car to complement the Maserati 6CM he was racing at the time.
The owner after Gunnar Elmgren was Jan Mathiasson from Gothenburg who subsequently sent it to Swedish Maserati Specialists AMK in Saltsjöö-Boo in 2005 to have the body and engine restored. The interior was also re-trimmed at the same time. The car was sold to Stockholm collector Roddy Berntsson who sent it back to AMK, this time to have the brakes and suspension refurbished. The car was then Ferrari red but the current owner has had it repainted in Rosso Rubino, the colour it was painted originally. This is a splendid example, in nice condition, with superb mechanics and still retaining its original engine.
Estimation 250 000 – 290 000 €

Chassis ‘1053’ is one of those ten left-hand drive European cars to the ultimate specification and was supplied new to Dr Alfredo Belponer, president of the Scuderia Brescia Corse racing team which at the time was campaigning Ford GT40s and Ferrari 512Ss. Dr Belponer was no stranger to exotic roadgoing machinery, having commissioned a Maserati 5000GT and later purchasing the sole Lamborghini Miura Jota, although it was destroyed before delivery. For his new Ghibli SS Spyder he chose a handsome light metallic blue livery combined with black Connolly leather upholstery and matching hood, all of which are still the originals 44 years later. From Dr Belponer the Ghibli SS Spyder passed to an Italian client who spent time between his home country and the USA, and from him it was acquired by the Candini family of Maserati fame, who for years had looked after it for him. They cherished the car, enjoying and showing it regularly, before it was acquired by the present German owner.

A very special Ghibli Spyder, a European version, the most desirable and one that has stayed in Italy all its life and had only two owners. It is matching numbers, in its original colours and comes with the rare and coveted hard top.

It is in completely original condition and was repainted once, very well, in its original shade of Giallo about twenty years ago.

According to verification by the Maserati factory archives a few days ago, of the 125 Ghibli Spyders built only 47 were sold in Europe of which only 26 were sold in Italy.

This one was sold new in Rome to a man in the entertainment/movie industry. He kept it until around 1977 when the current owner acquired it and kept it for 46 years!

This owner who recently passed away had a private collection with 65 cars and a full time mechanic who still works full time for the widow.

He has maintained the car perfectly and driven it to keep it current.

Keen Maserati connoisseurs will have noticed that many Ghibli Spyders have had more owners than a courtesan, numerous color changes and end up resale red or grey. Of course a majority of Ghibli Spyders were US market cars with unsightly large indicators, many of which have since been removed meaning those cars are no longer original.

In sharp contrast this car is a Euro version pampered all its life by two discerning owners who kept it fully original.

Giallo, fly yellow is a spectacular, happy colour that suits the Ghibli Spyder to perfection.

The Ghibli Spyder was the sensation of the Turin salon when it was launched in 1968, a veritable Riva Aquarama for the road it immediately became a symbol and icon of the dolce vita on both sides of the Atlantic, from Portofino and St Tropez to the Hamptons and Beverly Hills. It is without question the most glamorous Maserati road car ever made, a delight to drive, which both its owners have done to the tune of 102000kms (approximately 63380 miles) and a regal star at any concours or event.

It is a very easy comfortable car to drive with plenty of torque, has huge charisma with that fabulous sounding engine, fits drivers of all sizes and includes a large trunk, an actual rarity among spyders.

It is also priced very reasonably all in at €660000 (approximately US$701417, GB£574135).

Bear in mind that at the August 2023 Gooding Pebble Beach auction a non original Ghibli Spyder (i.e. a berlinetta cut into a spyder by a non factory workshop) was sold for US$400000 so this is clearly a price as tempting as this original gem itself. Indeed some spyders are on the market at over €800000.

Located an hour south of Rome, Italy, inspection by appointment.

Offered here is a 1969 example of the Ghibli, which was acquired by the vendor, via a private sale, in 1998. At that time the car underwent a major service, which included tappet clearances, timing chain tensioners, plugs, points oils etc. In the intervening 12 years, the car has covered less than 2000 miles, which is why its is offered for sale. The current odometer reading is 53144km (33029 miles), which is thought to be correct.

Finished in metallic cherry red with cream leather, the car is described as being a very sound, condition 2+, usable car, which has a good cosmetic appearance. It has recently passed the UK MoT and is eligible for free historic tax, which is displayed and expires in March 2011.

Was bought on UK auction in 2010 with 4.2 litre engine.

Previously owned by an employee at specialist Bill McGrath, this RHD example retains its original and rare (it is rumoured only 50 such cars were built) Borg Warner automatic transmission. Featured in a 1982 issue of Classic Cars, it was subsequently sold to a valued customer who commenced a photographic restoration. Now described as being “fully matching numbers and complete”, a recent inspection was undertaken at Bill McGrath’s and a list of recent jobs done is available. Said to display excellent oil pressure, the car had been in the same ownership from 1982 up to its acquisition by the vendor in January 2014. Riding on aluminium Campagnolo wheels and attractively finished in blue with “complete and original” black interior and “excellent” chassis, this stylish and highly capable Grand Tourer recently completed a near 1,000 mile trip to Classic Le Mans which included 7 laps of the historic circuit and is now ready to be enjoyed.

Amelia Island Concours 2010

Now coming up for sale

This 1970 Maserati Ghibli is one of 125 Spyders manufactured during four years of production and was reportedly ordered new via Trident Imported Motors in Rosemont, Pennsylvania, by Charter Company founder Raymond K. Mason in Florida. Chassis 1087 is said to have been collected by Mason in Modena on October 26, 1970, and subsequently driven to Ireland, where it spent two years before being shipped to New York and driven to Florida. The car was then fitted with a Chevrolet V8 and remained in service under original ownership for several years before being placed in storage until the 1990s, when it was purchased by Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance chairman Bill Warner. An ensuing refurbishment included the installation of a replacement Maserati V8 and the addition of a ZF five-speed manual transmission in place of the car’s original automatic gearbox. The car made an appearance in the final scene of the 2011 film Love, Wedding, Marriage before the discovery and installation of a 4.7-liter quad-cam V8 stamped with its chassis number. The car remained under Warner’s stewardship until 2015 and was later purchased by the selling dealer in 2023. Finished in Blu Medio, the car also features four Weber carburetors, dry-sump lubrication, servo-assisted disc brakes, Campagnolo alloy wheels, power steering, a black convertible top, beige leather interior upholstery, air conditioning, power windows, and a push-button radio. This Tipo AM115/S is now offered in North Salem, New York, with a matching two-piece luggage set, factory literature, a tool kit, DVD and Blu-ray copies of Love, Wedding, Marriage, and a clean Florida title.
