Sold at Bonhams 2011

The car on offer rolled out in March 1970. It is a Rosso Fuoco red with black leather interior, as per the official confirmation from Maserati. The car has the 5-speed gearbox and it's the 4.9-litre version, in SS guise, without power steering, which is the most desirable of all Ghiblis, the max power being 335bhp instead of the 310bhp of the 4.7. The car was delivered new in Rome and has had just two owners since new. The odometer displays just 21,192 km since new and the engine is the original one. The second owner, a great Parisian collector, who bought it at a sale in Paris, has completely restored the car, with an overhaul of the cooling system and water pump, installation of safety belts, a stainless steel exhaust system, the fitting of a Clarion car stereo with its electric car stereo, so that today the car is running smoothly and efficiently and all the equipment function perfectly (all invoices are included in the file). Avon tires are fitted on the Campagnolo alloy rims where original little brand stickers are still there! It is equipped with tinted windows and a battery switch. The air-conditioning was redone and the seats were given new stuffing whilst maintaining the beautiful patina of the original.

There were questions asked about the font used on the chassis number of this car but its been verified as authentic by Maserati / Fabio.
2 known cars have got the same type of stamped font which is not the usual variation, both 1624 and 1622.
The one photo of the internal engine number is without any doubt correct and unmistakable in its font and stamp.
The sequence number is correct.

have owned this Ghibli for over 20 years. When I bought it it had just had a total restoration to #1 condition, on a California car by Maserati Information Exchange ( MIE)...Every part of the car was restored to perfection. Since then it has been in my collection, stored in a heated warehouse on wooded floors, serviced yearly by only one mechanic (Autoturismo, Steve Mastroiani). It was driven 50-100 miles a month, then stored in winters. It is fully sorted and one of the best driving Ghiblis available. Cosmetically it is still in show condition showing only the slightest bit of wear. If you are in the market for a Maserati Ghibli of this quality you must see and drive this example. Call for more pictures but you will want to see this car. Asking $239,000

This Maserati 4.7 Coupe is a highly authentic Swiss car, which had only four, mostly long-term owners. It was first delivered via Martinelli & Sonvico in Lugano to the ambassador of Thailand in Bern. After briefly owning the car the Ambassador sold it to a gentleman from Basel, who kept it until 1995. Until now, the car changed hands one more time in 2010.
Thanks to relatively few owners, this Maserati survived in very original condition, still maintaining its first leather interior. But after almost 50 years on the road, it was time for a more extensive restoration than just the regular maintenance work. This task has been entrusted to a long-term and well-known marque specialist in Switzerland. He overhauled the engine and all ancillary components, restored the wiring loom and electric components and fitted a complete new exhaust system in stainless steel. The complete body was stripped to bare metal and repainted in its original yellow colour tone. During this process all the bright work was re-chromed as well. The car has been driven 1'500 km since the completion of the restoration and already had its first service.
A nice history file, the original owner's manual, spare keys and tool set complement the wonderful condition of this car.

A beautiful example of the designer Giorgetto Giugiaro’s masterpiece that he designed for Ghia. This car is powered by a dry-sump, twin-cam 4.7 liter 287 cubic inch V-8 engine. The engine breathes through four two-barrel Weber carburetors producing 310 horsepower and has a ZF five-speed manual transmission, and comes with power steering
This Maserati has an adjustable steering wheel, electric windows, reclining seats with head rests, heated rear windscreen, dashboard clock, and radio. It has late style 15” Borrani pressed steel center and alloy rims. This Ghibli is red with black leather interior. The interior is the original leather and carpet except for the two seats.
Purchased in 1984, the vehicle has since been garaged in Southern California. The previous owner drove the vehicle between his residences in Las Vegas Nevada and Southern California. Not driven much in the last ten years, the vehicle now has 100,000 on the speedometer. The engine runs very well and car functions in all capacities except for the turn signal switch, which needs to be rebuilt. The car was maintained by master mechanic Jacque Laude for over thirty years.

AM115.49.1668 AM115.49.1668 1970 Ghibli SS
United Kingdom

According to a build record from Maserati Classiche, chassis no. 1668 completed assembly in April 1970. The car was factory equipped with a five-speed ZF gearbox and bolt-on Campagnolo wheels, and finished in Rosso Rubino paint with a white Connolly leather interior.
In the early 1970s, the Ghibli SS is believed to have been purchased by Peter Garrett of Brighton, Victoria. After importing the car to Australia, Garrett commissioned a conversion to right-hand drive though Eddie Thomas, a high-profile Australian drag racer with a restoration and speed shop. After the conversion to RHD specifications, Garrett retained possession into the late 1980s and the car was sold upon his passing by Eddie Thomas on behalf of the family.
Circa 1989, the Maserati was acquired by Michael Gostelow, though he kept the car only briefly before selling it to Richard Prince of Brighton, Victoria. Prince drove the Ghibli SS regularly through 1994, when he sold the car to collector and restoration specialist David Rodd of Caulfield, Victoria (at the time a partial owner of JB Hi-Fi, one of the country’s leading consumer electronics retailers).
In 1996, the 4.9 Coupe was purchased by Brian Telfer of Queensland, and he enjoyed the car for seven years before selling it to the consignor in February 2003. Chassis no. 1668 was the first Maserati in the consignor’s collection, and it ignited a passion within him for the marque. He initially commissioned some light mechanical freshening and then drove the car modestly for a few years before opting for a full restoration.
In 2012, the car was shipped to the experts at McGrath Maserati in the UK, and a three-year refurbishment was conducted that included a return to the original left-hand-drive configuration. The 4.9-liter V-8 was comprehensively rebuilt, and the body and interior were cosmetically refinished in the original factory colour scheme. McGrath has continued to maintain the car as needed over the past few years. Depicted as the cover image for a feature in the November 2017 issue of Auto Italia magazine, this beautifully presented Ghibli SS is a splendid example that would bolster any sporting collection.

This car has belonged to an active Maserati club member for many year. It was one of the few originally built with an automatic transmission, but was converted to 5-sp early on. He has engaged us to sell this one and his Mistral.
Very clean, solid classic Maserati Ghibli with only 60K actual miles and from 30-year ownership. Part of a multi-Maserati collection and one that has benefitted from regular use. Always well-serviced, the Italian classic retains its original engine and is a very strong runner. Has proper oil pressure and no overheating issues. Originally pale blue, years ago it was changed to this metallic burgundy, which looks much more striking with the original white upholstery, all set off by the chrome wire wheels. Dash fuzz is excellent, as are instruments, carpets and all glass. Ordered new as a US-spec car, it was one of a number made with an automatic transmission, but was later converted to an original Maserati 5-speed manual gearbox with all correct linkage and pedals. The Giugiaro-designed body by Ghia has always been one of the Trident’s most valued models and remains an eye-catcher today. The car has a rust and damage-free undercarriage, excellent paint & interior and recently received a new water pump, coolant flush, general servicing and new battery. It comes with spare, tools, a file of paintwork photos and shop manual.

Afterwards the car went to London in 1988 The owner Mr Richard Gregorian kept the car until 2013. In 2013 the car was purchased by a Belgian industrialist. According to confirmation from Maserati SpA this particular car was constructed in May 1970 with a 4930 cc engine.
The original colour of the car was Rosso Rubino metallic and the interior was in black Connolly leather. The car had also been fitted with power-steering and had the lightweight magnesium wheels.
The car had been ordered by the Swiss Maserati importer in Lugano and they delivered the car on 27-05-1970 to their official Maserati dealer Ruf AG in Offringen. Ruf AG has sold the car to first Swiss owner Mr. H.Tschudin from Grenchen.
In 1974 this car had only 4.000 km’s on the clock and was then purchased in Switzerland by wealthy Dutch industrialist Dries van der Loft. This Mr. Dries van der Loft was already a vivid car and racing-enthusiast since the 1940’s and he was the founder of the Dutch Racing Drivers’ Club. In 1952 the Dutch Grand Prix was given Championship status and Dries van der Lof participated in this Grand Prix with one of John Heath’s HWM-Alta’s against the likes of Stirling Moss, Jean Behra, Alberto Ascari, Nino Farina, Pierro Taruffi, Ducan Hamilton and many other great drivers.
Dries van der Loft had evolved into one of Holland’s leading car collectors and racing enthusiast. The newly acquired Maserati Ghibli went into his collection of major Maserati’s, Ferrari’s and others. But is seemed that Dries van der Lof did like to use the Ghibli for commuting because when he put the car for sale again in 1983 it had 63.000 km’s on the clock.
The car was purchased by another Dutch car loving family who is today still the owner of the car. Dries van der Lof assured the family that the car never had any accidents or damage, which is still the situation today.
In 1985 the new owners had the ZF-gearbox overhauled by Media in The Hague, because of a faulty bearing.
At the same moment they had the front- and rear-bumper re-chromed. In 1995-96 some rust-damage was taken car off, which had appeared on the edges of the wheel-arches, front of engine-cover and the tail-section; the most common spots on the Ghibli’s. Work was done by Jan van de Visch in Barneveld and then the car was repainted in its original colour again and the wheels were repainted.
The Maserati has proven itself to be very reliable and it did only let the family down once when just before arriving back home the clutch cylinder gave way due to a broken oil-ring. On regular long trips through Scotland it always performed flawless. This Ghibli has been maintained regularly over the years and it was always stored dry and warm. Last year the brake-callipers, brake master-cylinder and Bonaldi brake power assistance have been overhauled. Engine and gearbox are on fresh fluids and the rear-axle/limited slip will be done shortly. At the same moment carburettors were checked, adjusted and where necessary overhauled. Total mileage now is 107.500 km’s which is all documented.
This Ghibli has never been restored, just well maintained and serviced. All original bodyschütz is still in the engine-room,
inside the wheel-arches and on the underside of the car.
The interior is as it was in 1970, upholstery and carpets are original. Only the drivers floor mat and the dashboard did need to be replaced. The original crick with its bag and the original tool-bag are present. Only the original Maserati tools and instruction manual are missing. This Ghibli is complete, even the foam pillows that go under the mats in the back, behind the seats, are present. All gauges and switches are correct and in working order. Presently a new lock for the glove-box is being fabricated as that has been faulty since the car was bought in 1983. Same for the little handle that is needed to close the power-windows in case of power-loss, is being fabricated now. All tinted glass and window-rubbers in the car are original. Heath-isolation on inside of engine-cover is original, so are strips in engine-compartment, Bonaldi power brake cylinder, carburetors and airfilter. This car has never been messed around with. It has power steering and air-conditioning. Airco needs to be revived as it was rarely used. It would be nice to fit an original Hirschmann power antenna again. The original Campagnolo magnesium wheels are still with the car but presently are 4 new aluminium Campagnola wheels fitted to the car for safety reasons, with new Michelin XWX tyres. The spare-wheel in the car is still the original 1970 magnesium Campagnola with Campagnolo transfers, and the original 1970 tyre.
Today this car is in good and original condition, with fresh MOT. It is a great performer with good mechanics and a rare find in its originality with early ownership of a local F1 driver as a bonus.
In line with other cars being offered for sale on the open market, the private owner has priced his car at 300.000 euro
