This Maserati Ghibli SS 4.9 was, according to the Maserati factory documents, certificate, letter and other documents, already delivered to the USA and approved in November 1968 and is therefore considered a pre-series or one-off production before the official debut in the following year 1969.
For this reason, the vehicle we offer has the interior of the 4.7 installed in the factory, but the technology and the heart of the 4.9 SS 1968 can be seen. The vehicle was ordered and registered for the first time by Mr. David Stevens, son of the company’s founder Excalibur Automobile Corp. / Brook Stevens Design (USA).
The vehicle has been unrestored to this day and has matching numbers.
The pristine seats have a wonderful patina after many decades and the technology has of course always been maintained. Only the body was repainted once in the original paint to freshen up the faded metallic green and to let the vehicle shine in new splendour.
This Maserati was in the family museum „Brooks-Stevens-Museum“ for many decades and only came to Germany in 2010. The vehicle had a mileage speedometer with 13,500 miles (approx. 21,700km) installed, which was converted to a KM speedometer. The KM speedometer started at zero and has now run 14,800km in 10 years. This results in a presumably original total mileage of 36,500km. The vehicle is currently in second ownership.

Ghibli 758 was delivered in November 1968 to Italian actor Lando Buzzanca, pictured below, sitting on his car spring 1969. Delivery took place by SaMoCar Rome.
He and his family owned the car till the early eighties when it sold back to the dealer and remained in their custody till 2004.
As part of a small collection of 5 Ferrari’s and Maserati’s the Ghibli was sold by SaMoCar through Bonhams in Monaco.
That same year, Ghibli 758 ended up in the collection of the Riverside International Automotive Museum museum in California.
Co founder and owner was Doug Magnon, who died at too young age of 55 in 2015.
Early 2016 it was then decided to close down the Museum and sell the huge collection of mainly Maserati’s through Sotheby’s.
Ghibli 758 is back in Europe and currently under restoration in the Netherlands. Should be back on the road spring/early summer 2018. The car by now has covered 68 K km’s.

This particular Ghibli (chassis number AM 115–778) is a left-hand drive European spec vehicle previously kept in Monaco, the UK, Austria and Germany. It was converted to a Spyder model by a renowned London coach builder in the late 1980s; service history suggests that the car was still registered in Monaco at the time. In 1995, the car was briefly UK registered (CYY 252G) before being exported to Austria where it was kept for the last 20 years. The vehicle has no export marker and thus remains UK registered.

This vehicle is currently located in Berlin, Germany.

This particular car was imported from Italy by its Californian owner in 1986. He retained the car in Downey, California until 2001, before passing it on to its next keeper, also in California. That owner fastidiously maintained and considerably improved the car during his 13 year ownership, during which he covered 25,000 kilometers.
In addition to performing regular fluid changes, valve adjustments, and tune-ups, he also significantly improved the car. In 2004, the engine was removed from the car and resealed as needed, and also fitted with new main bearings, water pump bearing and seal, and miscellaneous other items. The clutch was replaced and the flywheel resurfaced, and the braking system rebuilt with new rotors, pads, new caliper pistons and seals, in addition to front brake lines. The car was also stripped and repainted at this time, and the owner reports that no rust or filler of significance was noted in the body. The chrome was also renewed at this time, and the fuel tanks removed, cleaned, and reinstalled along with new fuel pumps. Over the years, service work also included redoing the AC system, including evaporator, drier, condenser, compressor, fans, and ducting. The rear springs were redone in 2008, and new Koni shock absorbers fitted as well. A compression check performed 11,000km (6800 miles ago) indicated compression figures of 155-165 psi on all eight cylinders. The car was serviced most recently in August 2014, which included oil and filter change, valve adjustment, chassis lubrication, differential oil, new fuel lines from the filter to the carburetors, recharged air conditioning, new tires, and redyed interior.
Cosmetically, the car is an attractive driver level car with an excellent body. The panels are straight with good fit and operation. The paintwork is glossy and was done to nice driver standards and appears to be a bit thick with some orange peel and a handful of surface cracks at complex body contours such as the base of the windscreen and near the C-pillar vents. The chrome and brightwork are in very good to excellent shape and were done to very good standards. The glass is also in very good shape and the wheels are excellent.
The interior is striking in its shade of bright red leather. The recently redyed seats are excellent, as are the door panels and dashboard. The carpets are also in excellent shape, as are the instruments, switches, and controls. The original steering wheel is fundamentally sound although the finish on the rim has worn in some places. The overall presentation is correct, although the car is fitted with a modern stereo.
The engine compartment presents correctly overall and appears well-maintained rather than freshly restored. There is some soiling present, but no signs of neglect, and the engine compartment would respond well to an afternoon spent cleaning and detailing. A pair of electric fans has been added to assist with cooling. The trunk is surprisingly capacious and connects to the passenger compartment in the style of a hatchback, which enhances the practicality of the car. It is trimmed in red to match the interior and is in excellent shape.
The car runs and drives very well. The engine starts easily and is well-tuned, making good power and a wonderful exhaust note. The car keeps up with modern traffic handily and the performance remains exciting even today. The transmission shifts beautifully, with a slickness that is generally uncommon in Italian cars of this vintage. The brakes work well and the suspension works effectively, providing sure-footed handling and good body control, particularly once at speed.
This particular example is an excellent opportunity to acquire a fastidiously maintained and very attractive driver level Ghibli in a striking color combination. Having been driven 25,000 km in the last 13 years, the car has been continuously improved and is relatively dialed in, as opposed to a car which suffers from years disuse and the accompanying deferred maintenance punch-list. This car comes with a detailed maintenance log from this period, as well as some invoices, a reprinted manual (uso e manutenzione), and parts bulletin book.

Built in July 1969, this Ghibli was delivered new to Beverly Hills, California, and, according to the consignor, it was converted to a spider in prior ownership, likely during the 1980s. The Maserati was imported to Australia by the consignor in 2006, where a meticulous 10-year restoration was undertaken, and largely performed by the renowned Re-Creation Automotive Pty Ltd., near Melbourne. According to the consignor, this remarkable 6,600-hour endeavor cost nearly $615,000 AUD and is documented with over 250 pages of invoices. The finished product is sensational, and the Ghibli is now equipped with the more sporting five-speed ZF gearbox. At Motorclassica 2018 in Melbourne – one of the largest shows in the southern hemisphere – the Maserati won awards for both Best in Class and Restoration of the Year. A testament to Re-Creation Automotive’s craftsmanship, this was its third Restoration of the Year award in a row. For enthusiasts seeking an exciting open-motoring experience, this impressive Ghibli represents incredible value, and its fantastic colors and presentation are sure to draw a crowd wherever it is shown. Originally black with white interior and was delivered back to Italy to convert to “Euro” spec.

This 1968 Maserati Ghibli is #25 of approximately 425 SS coupes produced between 1969 and 1973 and was delivered new to Rolma Automobili S.r.l. of Milano, Italy. It was acquired out of Japan in early 2020 and subsequently imported to the US by the selling dealer, who commissioned a cosmetic refurbishment that included a bare-metal repaint in the factory shade of Verde Gemma and a reupholstered interior in Senape tan leather. Power comes from a replacement 4.7-liter quad-cam V8 paired with a ZF five-speed manual transmission, and mechanical work carried out by the selling dealer included rebuilding the carburetors, changing the fluids, and replacing the tires, cam cover gaskets, upper ball joints, fuel filters, spark plugs, and ignition wires. Additional equipment includes a Clarion AM/FM cassette stereo, pop-up headlights, four-wheel disc brakes, and 15” Campagnolo wheels. This Ghibli SS is being offered with Maserati Classiche documentation, a tool kit, car cover, and a clean Washington title.
