On the road from 1968 - 1974. Now restored and back on road May 2017, 2nd owner

Being auctioned 25 May 2019

This breathtakingly beautiful coupé was registered new in Switzerland on the 20th June 1968. Research on the
Ghibli has found two owners before the vendor was able to buy the car in very poor state in 2006. A 10 year meticulous restoration was carried out with a view to maintain
originality as much as possible. The (matching-number) engine, the gearbox, axle, suspension and brakes were all thoroughly overhauled. The body was restored and
starting with the bare metal, it received a primer, two coats of paint as well as three coats of clear varnish in the original shade of “oro metallico”. The interior received
a thorough cleaning and the seats, as well as the middle console and the instrument panel were covered in new Conolly hide. The giant effort was rewarded in May 2017
with a successful Veteran MOT. This Maserati offers a chance to buy a much sought after first series example
(with the more beautiful and desirable instrument panel) in its absolute original specification and in outstanding
condition

This car was in Kanton Solothurn (4565 Recherswil) in the hands of its former owner, born 1930 until now, so that I'm the second owner. The car is first registered 06.1968 and there's no record of colour change so that -at least- it has always been blue. It has 127'000 kms and has passed inspection as Veteranfahrzeug this month so that next technical control will be in 6 years. The body is in very very straight shape, the panels alignments are excellent and no welding underneath. The paint has been done at least once but is old and will need refinish. The interior appears all original with original leather everywhere as well as original carpets. The seats have been once re-coloured but are now somehow tired so I'll try to save as much as possible but the seats will have to be probably done. Comments from 2010. Sold 2012. Blue with tan trim

Coming up for auction June 23 2018 Dorotheum auctions Vienna. Motor from AM 115.1008 fitted
"The Maserati Classic certificate for this one states that the Ghibli was delivered and approved in Italy in June 1968, boasting the captivating combination of Celeste Chiaro and black leather. The fitted air conditioning is an essential option that greatly enhances a positive Ghibli experience. An early model, it is graced by the delicate tail design and the central locking spoked wheels. It was registered in Italy until 2014, before being imported to Germany. Although the bodywork was repainted in recent years, the Maserati is an unrestored vehicle. The interior is entirely preserved and still exudes quintessential Italian style, although the seat cushions boast an immediately noticeable patina. The car starts, runs, brakes on command, and above all guarantees goose bumps! Given its top speed of 270 km/h and its unrestored condition, it might be advisable to ask an expert to cast an eye over the mechanics, just to be on the safe side"

Last known of in Australia, and rego then was LWC 591. Believed factory RHD.
Sold to Terry Healy, probably in the early 80's, and have heard several stories of its life from then - last that it was a wreck owned by a collector in Adelaide!

The Ghibli was originally white and Terry Healy restored it to a very high standard in black with red trim. It was to a friend who immediately repainted it silver. He kept it for some years & it was sold to Bob Haddaway in Perth in early 90’s. He displayed the car in a museum at Whitemans park from where it was stolen & taken for joyride & very badly damaged. Bob was paid out for it and it sold to current owner who has a number of Maserati's, none running and claims he will get to restoration of the Ghibli.

(07 Nov 2005) This a 1967 Maserati Ghibli beautiful finished in metallic medium green and brown leather seats fitted in its interiors. Life long Arizona car, it has never been in an accident and has no rust. One of the owners did all the mechanical work himself, he was a crew for Phil Hill in the begging of his career and a very qualified mechanic. Excellent mechanical condition: Engine, transmission, steering, lights, tires all of them Perfect!! The engine was rebuilt 2000 miles ago and converted to fuel injection, keeping the original Webers and air cleaner with the car. The paint body was done 15 years ago by a high quality metal working paint & shop. Other than a couple door dings the body is excellent.

This 1968 Maserati Ghibli is an unrestored example that has been inoperable since 1979. The car was bought new by William J. Thomas, president of Lear Siegler Inc. in Detroit. He reportedly took the car to a repair shop in Midland, Michigan in 1979 and never went back to get it. The owner of the shop eventually took possession of the car, but it remained unused. In 2012 the shop owner fell ill and sold the business, and the seller acquired the car as a project. Its non-running 4.7-liter V8 is paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Finished in green over black leather, this Ghibli now shows 51k kilometers (~32k miles) and is offered with a clean Michigan title in the seller’s name.

1968 Maserati Ghibli Project

The Ghibli was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, and bodies were built by Ghia. This example’s paint color is Verde Gamma, and rust bubbles are visible on both doors and on the hood. As shown up close in the photo gallery below, there is a dent in the right-front fender ahead of the wheel.

The car rides on 15″ magnesium Campagnolo wheels wearing old tires. Photos in the gallery show that the car retains a Michigan front license plate from 1979.

This outstanding example of Maserati's classic Ghibli stands out as one of the finest restored examples of the model that we have ever seen. Completed at Maserati's Modena workshops in April of 1967, this Ghibli Coupe, chassis no. AM115.538 was built as a left hand drive Coupe equipped with the desirable 5-speed manual ZF transmission for the home market, and finished in Light Blue Celeste Chiaro over a Black Connoly leather interior. The new Ghibli had been ordered by a Torino-based company called Plastic Kero Super S.p.a., and was delivered to them on July 20th, 1968. By the 1970s, the Maserati had found its way to the US, and was here owned by a wealthy gentleman living in New York by the name of JeeJeebhoy. As the story goes, Mr. Jeejeebhoy would use the car during the 1970s, including long trips across the US. During one trek from New York to Las Vegas, the Maserati had issues while crossing the state of Nebraska, and was left here for the next three decades. The car was discovered in a barn near Lincoln, Nebraska in 2006, the cars odometer reading was just 83,000 Kms (51,000 miles), a reading that is in fact believed to be the cars original since new.

By the late 2000s, a ground up restoration was begun to bring the aging Ghibli back to its former glory. The car is said to have been highly original before this extensive restoration commenced, but it should be noted that at some point early on, and possibly the cause of Mr. Jeejeebhoy's breakdown in Nebraska, the cars original engine number AM115.538 was replaced by a correct, 4.7 Liter unit from a Ghibli built just a few months later, carrying engine and chassis number AM115.720. The three-year, nut and bolt restoration was performed by Denver's award-winning European sports car specialists, Classic Investments. Hundreds of restoration photos are available in the Ghiblis extensive restoration file, documenting each step of the extensive refurbishment.

Since the restoration was completed, the blue Ghibli has toured the Councours fields, and raked numerous First-in-Class Awards at national level Concours d'Elegance events such as the Santa Fe Concorso. Offered with extensive Maserati Classiche paperwork, including copies of the original built sheets and handwritten Alfieri Maserati test-sheets before delivery, this Ghibli is ready for serious scrutinizing. This magnificent Ghibli, meticulously restored, with a factory five speed manual transmission, presented in a striking color combination, truly stands out among its peers as one of the finest examples of the model available today. With Ghibli restorations to this fanatical level few and far between, we believe that a better Ghibli will be very hard to find indeed; this car's next owner will surely be impressed with the quality of this fantastic Maserati.

The car was featured in the movie "La Piscine" (English title: "The Swimmingpool"). The car was then in the hands of the production company of that film and registered as 15-TY-75. In August 1968 the car was sold to a Mr. Real del Sarte. What happened then is unclear. Confirmed is that the car was scrapped in 2002. The engine survived and was sold separately.

"This 1968 Maserati Ghibli is stunning in its bright yellow livery with a black leather interior, the colors in which it was delivered when new by a California-based dealer to legendary entertainer Sammy Davis, Jr., its first owner. It has been comprehensively restored to better than new condition, earning it the award for Best Italian Sports Car at the 2001 Greenwich Concours. Today, the Ghibli remains stunning, with the paint, chrome, glass, rubber body seals and upholstery all as-new or better. In addition to the Campagnolo alloy wheels shod with high performance but period Avon tires, features include a Blaupunkt stereo system and a Borg-Warner three-speed automatic transmission, which was a rare original option on the Ghibli"

As offered, the Ghibli is complete with a thick restoration binder containing many photos, as well as the original owner's manual, a parts book and a letter from the Maserati Club confirming its famous first owner. Clearly, this former concours winner remains stunning and offers the opportunity to experience its stellar handling, blistering performance and user-friendly drivability.
