Now available at Exclusive Motorcars, after 46 years of single ownership, is this lovely survivor quality 1972 Maserati Ghibli 4.9SS.

Finished in a very tasteful Blue Metallic over Creme colour scheme, and with only 12k original miles, this is an exceptional candidate for a full restoration or simply an every day driver. Sporting a 4.9L V8 and a 5-speed manual transmission, this SS is an example of the most sought after model in the Ghibli line-up. When new they put out over 330hp, thrusting them to around a 174mph top speed. Power delivery from this particular car is smooth and the transmission shifts effortlessly through the gears, reflecting the quality of care this car received in its life (also telling of the recent service by the past owner.) The original interior is showing its age, but has a nice patina and has a lovely classic leather scent. The paint is of driver quality, with flaws showing in a couple of places. Overall, however, it is of nice enough quality to be appreciated from a close distance. It is accompanied by its window sticker, books, and original toolkit.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to own the ultimate canvas for your dream Ghibli, these cars are still undervalued compared with their contemporaries and represent exceptional value in investment.

We have a wonderful 1971 Maserati Ghibli Spyder 4.7 “Campana”. The Campana is a bit of the oddity. Campana was a coach builder that was able to build a Spyder on the base of a Maserati Ghibli coupé. In first instance Maserati itself commissioned the Spyder conversion building a total of 125 spiders which 45 Ghibli SS Spyders. Costs forced Maserati to stop contracting the coupé to Spyder conversion out to Campana. As a consequence potential buyers could no longer order a Ghibli Spyder from Maserati, so they took their coupés to Campana themselves. This Ghibli Spyder is in great shape. The car has recently been completely re-sprayed. During this process some minor bodywork repairs were also carried out. The resulting effect is excellent. The fine bodywork has nice and thin, correctly aligned panelwork. It has good quality paintwork with only a few minor signs of use. The car proudly stands on its lovely Borrani wire wheels with nearly new correctly sized Pirelli P4000 tyres. The hood is in good condition with only minor signs of wear. It has lovely good quality beige leather interior trim. Naturally the switches and instruments are in as good a condition as the rest of the cabin and all in good working order. Mechanically the car is also very sound. The Ghibli has a 4.7 V8 engine coupled to a ZF 5-speed gearbox. The engine produces 310 Hp, good for zero to 100 km/hr in 6.9 sec and a top of 250 km/hr. Not to shabby in a current car, stratospherically fast for 1971! With only 37,218 km on the clock the car has never needed a rebuild, just good maintenance and servicing. That this Ghibli has been treated properly is evident from the invoices dating back 5 years. €13,500 was invested in keeping the car trim. The fantastic 4.7 litre V8 engine’s soundtrack is a joy in the coupé, remove the roof at your enjoyment will only multiply! The Maserati Ghibli is whatever guise a rare beast, one in this condition and a Spyder to boot is the pinnacle! Gallery Aaldering is Europe’s leading Classic Cars specialist since 1975!

Here’s a video showing it at auction

According to the Maserati factory certificate of authenticity (No. 30/2013) further supported by accompanying factory records, this Ghibli was built in September 1971, finished in Celeste Chiaro (metallic blue), trimmed with black leather interior, and outfitted with “Fuse” Campagnolo wheels. Documentation accompanying the car includes copies of the original Maserati Delivery Note, Internal Factory Oder, End of Line Data Sheet, and Final Tests Data Sheet with handwritten specifications for this car confirming the details and assembly for this Ghibli SS. Upon completion, the car was delivered to the first owner, Pierre Cornet, via French Maserati dealer, Etablissements Thepenier, Saint Cloud, France. Cornet, Directeur General of S.O.L.E.P. and loyal Maserati customer (including his ownership of a prior Ghibli), retained the car until 1985 when it was sold to the second owner. In 2002, the car was purchased by noted collector/enthusiast Abba Kogan who sold the car to the next owner in 2005.

By 2012, the car became the subject of a comprehensive bare metal restoration performed by Automotive Restorations of Stratford, CT documented with photographs and copious receipts detailing the metal work addressing all areas of the body including correction for minor rust which was limited to small water-prone areas as typically found on these cars. During the restoration the interior was removed entirely and retrimmed with black leather as originally delivered. The interior bright work and details were polished and refinished as needed, and new carpets and headliner installed. The car was finished in the correct light metallic blue and all chrome and polished exterior trim was refinished to a high standard. The completed car was exhibited at the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance where it earned a coveted “Amelia Award” in the Sports and GT Cars (1963-1974) class. Following the Amelia exhibit, this Ghibli went on to participate in the New England 1000 rally, completing it in May 2013. Showcasing once again both beauty and performance excellence, this Ghibli completed the 2017 Chopard Rally held in Dubai and, in 2022, completed the United Arab Emirates Mille Miglia covering 1,000 trouble-free miles in cool air-conditioned comfort.

Under current ownership, services and general maintenance have been regularly performed including 2021 and 2022 replacement of filters, gaskets, spark plugs, new oil tank hose, new AC compressor belt and condenser/compressor fan system rewiring, carburetor cleaning, selected paint touch up and blending, gauges disassembled and cleaned, new driver’s side window channel replacement, sun visor restoration, and interior switches and various buttons restored or replaced as needed.

Today this Maserati Ghibli presents in beautiful condition. The odometer indicates 67,097 kilometers which are believed to be reflective of original kilometers travelled since new.

This beautiful 4.9SS was produced in July 1971, finished in the stunning combination of Blue Sera (Dark Blue) with a Senape (Tan) Leather interior. Sold to the Baker Motor Company of Atlanta, Georgia, the Ghibli spent much of its earlier life in the US before being repatriated into the EU and restored to the condition you see here.
The bodywork of the Ghibli was carefully stripped back, restored and painted back to the correct shade of Blue Sera. The interior benefitted from a re-trim in its original tan leather and the motor was serviced and treated to a new clutch.
Our Ghibli is offered with its original build sheet, bill of sale and Maserati Classiche Certificate of Origin.

We saw a 1971 Ghibli 4.7 coupe (S/N 115 2392) sell for $71,628 on February 14 at Christie’s Retromobile auction in Paris 2004. [ in France since 2004 ]
Leaving the factory in 1971, chassis 115.2329 was delivered in the north of Germany. In 1982, it changed hands to join a very important collection from the Essen area. It was then restored with original new spare parts, in spite of its very low milage (27,000 km). In 1997, its new owner entrusted the car to the Maserati importer in Germany where it was equipped with a new exhaust system and completely overhauled, for a bill totalising some 20,000 DM of the time. Its condition is so exceptional that it is invited to enter the Louis Vuitton concours d’élégance at Bagatelle, Paris, that same year. It is then acquired in an auction in 2004 by Gilles Bonnafous, renowned car journalist and father of the present owner. It’s a story of love at first sight, the fulfilment of a 40 year old dream. In 2010, he gave to his son this very exceptional Ghibli, a real grail cherished by all its different owners, of which he used to say : « To drive this masterpiece at 100 km/h is like dancing in Mona Lisa’s arms ».

Reading only 35,000 km on the odometer, this sky blue with beige leather interior example is a serious contender to any “concours d’élégance”. Equipped with the rare period options of 4 Borrani wheels and power steering, this Ghibli registered in France is accompanied by its tool roll, restoration invoices, service booklet and original owner’s manual. The engine will be revised by Pierre Nallet (Garage du Trident) before the sale. Without any doubt, this Maserati Ghibli represent to any amateur the opportunity of a life to acquire one of the most beautiful example on sale on the market or even the most remarkable of all.
